How to plan a kitchen renovation without surprises

A new kitchen succeeds or fails with the preparation. With these five steps you know exactly when to decide what.

On site, a kitchen renovation often takes only two to three weeks. The preparation takes longer, and that is where most of the gain is. Decide on time and you avoid waiting and extra costs.

1. Start with how you cook

Write down what you do in the kitchen every day. Do you often cook together? Do you want a place to sit? Those answers shape the layout more than the colour of the fronts.

2. Fix the connections early

Water, drainage, gas or induction and the extractor determine where the island or sink can go. Have this measured before you choose a final design.

3. Choose materials in order

Start with the worktop, then the fronts, then the wall and the floor. That way you build a combination that works.

4. Plan the deliveries

Appliances and worktops have delivery times of four to eight weeks. A good schedule orders them as soon as the design is final.

5. Set up a temporary kitchen

A fridge, a kettle and an induction plate in another room make two weeks without a kitchen perfectly manageable.
